An expansive 21st century wine store, bar and café has set up digs in a 1914 mansion that once belonged to the governor.

Mendoza, Argentina is one of the eight great wine capitals of the world, but most visitors only have time to experience a handful of offerings from the over nine-hundred wineries in the area. A recent addition the Mendoza wine scene aims to change the way wine is purchased and enjoyed with a one-stop wine and spirits destination that is unlike anything else in the city.

Buenos Aires Wine Chain

Mendoza wines have made the long trip to be consumed by thirsty residents some seven-hundred miles to the east in Buenos Aires since winemaking came to region with Spanish settlers. The big city has now returned the favor by opening a new branch of an upscale wine chain, know simply as Winery. The Mendoza Winery location is the eleventh in the chain and the only one outside of Buenos Aires.

Spectacular Renovation

In the heart of downtown, Winery quietly began extensive renovations in 2007 to a historic home that was originally owned by Don Emilio Civit (1856-1920), a prominent politician. Careful preservation of the soaring ceilings, original moldings, exquisite art-deco details, columns and courtyard were combined with modern temperature control systems, a restaurant, bar and two patio areas.

Argentine Wine Focus

Compared to other wine-buying experiences in the area, Winery offers a larger, deeper selection of wines from Argentina as well as some imports, a full range of spirits and a variety of ways to enjoy a libation and a light meal while you're there . In addition, they produce a slick full-color catalog that feels more like a wine magazine. The unique eleven-hundred square meter space offers room for events that sets it apart from any other venue in Mendoza.

No Siesta Here

Along with big-city sophistication, Winery brings a seven day a week operation and does not close for the traditional siesta as many shops do. In a nod to local custom though, the restaurant is not open on Sunday. Staff is plentiful but low-key and knowledgeable. Credit cards are welcome and some English is spoken. Tourists will feel comfortable wandering from room to room, sampling in the bar or enjoying a bottle of wine along with food on the patio.

Gifts Galore

In addition to the sheer magnitude of the offerings, Winery's merchandising offers unique gift ideas that range from the unusual, like Malbec perfume to more traditional items such as wooden wine boxes, books, maps, stemware and attractively packaged wine accessories.

What you won't find at this wine shop are inexpensive jug wines or the everyday tipple that many Argentines enjoy. Very small boutique producers are more likely to be found at the Vines of Mendoza tasting room, but Winery offers a unique experience that is a welcome addition to the growing wine tourist scene.
